It was indeed a wonderful opportunity to attend and represent Pacific Islands Museum Association at the Museums Australia National Conference 2010, with the themes: "Interesting Times: New Roles For Collections."
An extremely well organised and full program with so much learning & networking.

MicheIle Hippolite, Kaihautu of Te Papa Tongarewa kicked started the Plenary midmorning touching ever so cleverly upon important aspects of 'Brave and bold: is being bicultural enough?'

Luncheon was an exciting affair in the Grand Buffet with a book launch 'Museums and the Public Sphere' by Dr Jennifer Barret.
Over the well laden long food tables I ran into Jo Ely - Curator of the Hunt Club Community Arts Centre and we sat with Julian Bickersteth (International Conservation Services) munching away on lunch chitchatting about issues around Changing environmental conditions for museums and galleries.

The evening dinners were lavish & decadent - Tuesday night welcome reception by Right Hon. the Lord Mayor Robert Doyle and Dr J Patrick Greene (CEO Museum Victoria) was held at the Melbourne Museum in Carlton Gardens which showcased the new 600 Million Years: Victoria Evolves Exhibition.

Wednesday: Cocktail Reception at Experimedia, State Library of Victoria which included a book launch: 'Exhibition Design for Galleries and Museums: an insider's view edited by Georgia Rouette & the MAPDA Award Presentations. I spent Wednesday evening with  Meredith Blake (RMIT University), Melanie Van Olffen (Australia Museum) and Sophie Couchman (Museum of Chinese Australian History) - fun times

!

Thursday: The Great Hall, National Gallery of Victoria, which included the ICOM Australia Awards for International Relations and the Global Curators for 2010.
It was inspiring to hear and meet committed people talk passionately about their work and issues they were facing.  The food was to die for set amidst the Great Hall under the lead lights of NGV.

Friday:

Closing Reception, Grainger Museum, University of Melbourne.

I was particularly interested by the ideas presented by Kylie Winkworth (Museum & Heritage Consultant) in Friday's plenary about Contending concepts: museums, collections & sustainability. Sophie and I spent time with Kylie discussing her talk as sustainability is an ever growing issue for most curators.

John Peterson (NSW Migration Heritage Museum) was also someone whose brains I picked at regarding the collection he manages. An innovative virtual heritage centre similar to an online immigration museum! Exhibitions are presented online and definately new age!

The 2011 Museums Australia Conference will be held in Perth in November of next year and through discussions with Organising Committee Co-Chairs (Victoria Branch) Laura Miles & Daniel Wilksh a contingent from the Pacific Museums should come out and represent.

Thank you PIMA and Tarisi Vunidilo for the opportunity to have served on your behalf at the conference.
